Driver safety is an increasingly important issue for professionals and policy makers.  While only a limited number of seniors who drive have fatal crashes, the annual number of fatal crashes caused by older drivers is expected to more than double by 2030, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Arlington, Va. Drivers who are at least 65 years old are expected to account for 16% of all crashes and 25% of all fatal crashes by 2030. Drivers who are 75 and older have higher crash rates per mile traveled than all groups but 16- to 18-year-olds. And bodily-injury liability claims nearly double for drivers who are 85 and older, meaning that they are more often at fault in crashes than younger drivers, according to the insurance institute.

Projection of 65+ Age Group as follows:

2000:  35,061,000

2030:  71,453,000 – 104% increase from 2000

2050:  86,705,000 – 147% increase from 2000

Between 2000 and 2050, there will be a 147% increase of the 65+ population while the overall population increase during the same time period will be 49%.

Projection of 85+ Age Group as follows:

2000:  4,267,000

2030:  9,603,000 – 125% increase from 2000

2050: 20,861,000 – 389% increase from 2000

Between 2000 and 2050, there will be a 389% increase of the 85+ population while the overall population increase during the same time period will be 49%.

In 2000, there were 4.3 million people ages 85+.

In 2050, it is projected that there will be 20.9 million people age 85+.
